ENGLISH SHORT COURSES

General Information

  • No pre-requisite to register for the courses.
  • Applicants have to sit for the (MEPT) to determine the beginning level. A score of less than 60 should start with Level 1; and a score of 61 and above, starts with Level 2.

Upon fulfilling the course requirement students will be awarded a certificate for completing the course. The English Short Courses are delivered in two modes, i.e:

A. Online Teaching Mode

B. Traditional Teaching Mode ( Currently in Desa Petaling Centre Only )

Tuition fee for each level is RM1500

LISTENING

Name of Subject: Listening 1

Course Code: SLEA 1013

The objective of the course: Upon completion of SLEA 1013, students should be able to:

  • Extend their abilities to listen effectively in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes
  • Extend their abilities by practicing the behaviors of effective, active listeners
  • Extend their abilities to assess strengths in listening and set goals for future growth
  • Participate constructively in conversation, small group, and whole group discussion, showing an understanding of when to speak and when to listen
  • Understand and report the main ideas in short listening tasks.
  • Present information/instructions about defined topics to others in a clear, organized way.

A synopsis of the paper: SLEA 1013 is the first level English language course.This course is specially designed for undergraduates with very limited English proficiency.  Students will learn to understand more of the English that they hear in various situations. They will also learn to comprehend, recall and record information delivered orally in various scaffold contexts. They will also exercise clear pronunciation and develop adequate speed for speech, proper intonation, etc in speaking learned through listening.

Course Code: SLEA 1023

The objective of the course: Upon completion of SLEA 1023, students should be able to:

  • Recognize main ideas in short audio listening segments
  • Find and understand detailed information in short audio listening segments
  • Take brief notes on short audio listening segments
  • Develop vocabulary and recognize grammatical structures related to listening tasks
  • Take notes on short listening tasks.
  • Understand and report the main ideas in short listening tasks.

A synopsis of the paper: SLEA 1023 is the second level English language course.This course is specially designed for undergraduates who have passed the first level. The students are introduced to the vocabularies that are common to home and college environment. The words are repeated in carefully designed texts and exercises in context which students will find meaningful. Grammatical structures are taught within the larger context in language use. The various language skills are covered in an integrative manner.

SPEAKING

Name of Subject: Speaking 1

Course Code: SLEB 1013

The objective of the course: Upon completion of SLEB 1013, students should be able to:

  • Speak fluently in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes and audiences
  • Practice the behaviors of effective speakers
  • Use talk to express and share feelings, ideas, and opinion
  • Extend their abilities by practicing the behaviors of effective speakers

A synopsis of the paper:SLEB 1013 is the first level English language subject, which is especially designed for undergraduates with very little English. The topics are thematically organized, task-based and student-centered. Structured speaking tasks, incorporating systematic work on reading and writing, encourage students to express themselves more appropriately. Students will speak and listen to explore, extend, and clarify and reflect on their thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences. They should be able to communicate information and ideas effectively and clearly, and to respond personally and critically. After the course, students are expected to comprehend, recall and record new information delivered orally in various scaffold context.

Course Code: SLEB 1023

The objective of the course: Upon completion of SLEB 1023, students should be able to:

  • Engage in spontaneous conversations by making relevant comments,and asking question.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of small group convention (e.g., soliciting and offering opinion, agreeing and disagreeing)
  • Ask for clarification of conversation and
  • Demonstrate pronunciation that is intelligible to native speakers accustomed to dealing with international students

A synopsis of the paper:SLEB 1023 is the second level English language subject, which is especially designed for undergraduates after passing the first level. The topics are thematically organized, task-based and student-centered. Structured speaking tasks, incorporating systematic work on reading and writing, encourage students to express themselves more appropriately. This course is expected to train students to speak confidently and effectively in a variety of everyday survival situations, improve clarity and accuracy of pronunciation. They will be developed to speak with confident through simple oral presentations on various topics.. The tasks and activities are generally graded in terms of difficulty and are designed in such a way that students are gradually encouraged to be independent learners.

Name of Subject: Reading 1

Course Code: SLEC 1013

The objective of the course: Upon completion of SLEC 1013, students should be able to:

  • Employ literal and inferential comprehension skills
  • Demonstrate inferential and critical thinking ability.
  • Establish wider knowledge in lexical expressions.
  • Broaden reading and writing vocabulary
  • Summarize with total comprehension

A synopsis of the paper: SLEC 1013is the first level English language subject, which is especially designed for undergraduates with very little English. This course will emphasize massive vocabulary acquisition; develop reading skills and strategies using simple stories, texts and articles. They should be able to comprehend passages of 100 words and improve oral reading fluency. Hopefully this course will enhance joy in reading English.

Course Code: SLEC 1023

The objective of the course: Upon completion of SLEC 1023, students should be able:

  • Read fluently and confidently a variety of texts for a variety of purposes
  • Practice the behaviors of effective, strategic reader
  • Assess strengths in reading and set goals for future growth
  • Value reading as a means of learning and enjoyment
  • Read independently for self-identified purpose
  • Recognize author’s main ideas and important supporting details

A synopsis of the paper:This is the second level English course designed for beginning and intermediate learners. Topics have been carefully selected from events, themes and activities that are common to students. Hence, It is designed to acquaint students with the common types of English words used every day. Short texts are used to reinforce reading skills: predicting, skimming, scanning and guessing meaning from context. They can also make inferences based on prior knowledge. Transition words are recognized thoroughly and paraphrasing is activated.

WRITING

Name of Subject: Writing 1

Course Code: SLED 1013

The objective of the course: Upon completion of SLED 1013 students should be able:

  • To write a substantive sentences and paragraphs that conforms to modern conventions of grammar and punctuation
  • To develop student skills in writing well and coherent cohesive paragraphs
  • To comprehend the rules of writing
  • To employ strategies of writing in the course

A synopsis of the paper: SLED 1013 is the first level English language subject, which is especially designed for undergraduates with very little English. This course focuses on developing basic writing skills. After completing the course, students are expected to be able to write short messages and descriptions; fill out simple forms; apply basic principles of capitalization and punctuation.

Name of Subject: Writing 2

Course Code: SLED1023

The objective of the course: Upon completion of SLEC 2033, students should be able:

  • To write a substantive sentences and paragraphs that conforms to modern conventions of grammar and punctuation
  • To develop student skills in writing well and coherent cohesive paragraphs
  • To comprehend the rules of writing
  • To employ strategies of writing in the course

A synopsis of the paper: This is the second level English course designed for beginning and intermediate learners. It is the continuation of the first level course in writing. They will learn how to write well-structured paragraphs. In addition, students will conduct basic internet searches and use word-processing software to write, edit and format assignments. This subject focuses on the simple sentences construction using correct sentence order (SVO). They will also learned to write notes/messages in imperative form , write descriptive sentences and practice journal writing using time expression , they will worked with sentences at the first level and move on to work with paragraph and essays at the more advance levels.

  • Create own reading texts using the reading mazes
